If you’re looking for things to do in Durban, check out our guide to the city’s main attractions. Here’s how to spend your holiday by the sea in the country’s laid-back, friendly city.

Things to do in Durban

This city is privy to warm, summer-soaked days that showcase why we’re loving known as living in sunny South Africa. Are you ready to fill up your bucket list for your next trip to Durban?

Moses Mabhida Stadium

While events and matches are regularly taking place here, there is also the opportunity to see Durban’s cityscape and ocean views from the stadium’s arch. A SkyCar ride takes you up to a viewing platform in just two minutes, offering visitors unparalleled panoramic views.

For those seeking a view along with a thrill, you can opt for the Adventure Walk up, and bungee jump down on the Big Rush Big Swing.

The Beaches

Durban has a slew of beaches you can visit, as well as beaches a little further along the coastline which extends in both directions, making for a great road trip.

Though without even leaving the city, you can take a dip in the warm waters or catch a wave with a surfboard at North Beach, South Beach, Bay of Plenty or Addington Beach.

Victoria Street Market

This is Durban’s oldest market and one which will leave you a little more cultured. You can get just about anything here, whether its spices, groceries, fabrics, crafts or souvenirs.

This is a colourful icon in the city made of 11 domes, famous for its Indian-inspired architecture, which is also linked to its African heritage.

uShaka Marine World is a must-visit for both children and adults. Dubbed as providing unlimited fun, this is a resort filled with palm trees, where you can slip, slide and swim to your heart’s content.

It is also home to many sea creatures, so keep an eye out for the seals, penguins, dolphins and fish — some of which you can swim with!

The Golden Mile is a promenade which stretches along Durban’s coastline. With many golden beaches along the way, it is perfect to walk, jog or skate along. Along the way, you’ll be met with many restaurant options and entertainment.

This hub is a central point for tourists and residents alike, celebrating Durban culture through sports and culture.

The Zulu Gondolas

Take a Zulumoon gondola boat ride on the Durban Point Waterfront Canal. The trip will take youfor a ride along the scenic canal and back.

If you’d like to spruce up the trip, there are upgraded packages available. These include picnics, live music and a message in a bottle for a romantic night out.

Ghandi’s House in Inanda Township

The Inanda Heritage route takes you to a semi-rural township on the outskirts of Durban. This is where you can visit the reconstructed home (named Sarvodaya, meaning well being for all) and printing press (of the Opinion newspaper) of Mahatma Gandhi.

On this heritage route, you will also learn about how other happenings in the area helped pave the road to democracy.

The Botanical Gardens

Durban’s Botanical Garden is the oldest surviving in Africa, dating back to 1849. Take a stroll through the gardens at your leisure, and see the dedicated and ongoing plant conservation first-hand. This is a crux for biodiversity, heritage, research and culture.

If you’re looking for more things to do, be sure to visit the Promenade, the KwMuhle Museum, the Durban Natural Science Musuem or Fun World.
